In a recent interview with OxAI (Oxford University’s Artificial Intelligence Society), Joe Braidwood reflected on the central argument of his January essay, “Why Constraint Based Alignment Is Not Enough.” The conversation followed a December OxAI talk in which he explained his decision to shut down his AI mental health company, Yara. Across both discussions, he returned to the same conclusion: compliance does not equal goodness. While he agrees that constraints are “necessary” for preventing harm, Braidwood does not believe the field should stop there.

For much of modern history, societies have understood infrastructure in material terms. Roads move goods. Energy grids power industry. Telecommunications networks transmit information across distance. These systems define the boundaries of economic possibility. Less visibly (but no less consequentially) education has long functioned as a form of national infrastructure. It is the mechanism through which societies cultivate skills, transmit knowledge, and reproduce the cognitive foundations of their workforce. Artificial intelligence is beginning to reorganize this foundation.
